For Susan C. Johnson, horses have always held a special place in her heart and they have become her primary painting subjects. She paints in a realistic style with oil paints and uses her own photographic references. Although it is essential that the "architecture" of these animals be correct, her references are merely a beginning point, not an ending place. Susan is inspired to paint horses because for her, they personify both the ability and courage to overcome sometimes incredible odds in order to survive. Their fortitude has left an indelible hoof print on her heart and she is compelled to tell their stories and capture their indomitable spirit and grace with canvas and paint.

Susan was born in Middletown, Connecticut and received her degree in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven, Connecticut.

She is a member of the Melrose Bay Art Gallery, Melrose, Florida. She has exhibited in area art shows and festivals and have won both awards of merit and excellence. She is a member of the Gainesville Fine Arts Association, Plein Air Florida, and the Artist Alliance of North Florida.
